The returns by air, which began last Saturday, have so far transported over Angolan refugees from Mongu, in the Western province of Zambia to Lumbala Nguimbo in the Eastern Angolan province of Moxico. The returning refugees leave the Mayukwauykwa Refugee resettlement in the Western province and travel in IOM convoys of buses and trucks to the transit centre in Mongu, where they spend the night before departing on the scheduled flights.
Once in Lumbala Nguimbo, IOM organizes the safe and orderly transportation of the returnees to their final destination in Moxico province. These routes include four days of road travel with stops in transit facilities in Lusaka and on the border crossing of Kamapanda.
During the first phase of the operation, carried out between June and November , IOM assisted over 18, Angolan refugees who were living in Zambia. The two governments provide security escorts and ensure immigration and customs formalities.
